Inside every one of us is a little something magic. Some of us have parents or mentors who help bring it out of us. Some of us find it on our own. Some of us go through life experiences that force it out of us. How can you help your child find it? There’s no clear answer. Like us, it’s a unique journey for them to tread. But, you certainly play a defining role and we have something to help. Today we’re sharing a way to unleash your child’s awesomeness by finding their inner superhero and we have a giveaway!
Our biggest charitable partner is MaxLove Project – a non-profit that helps empower kids fighting cancer and other serious illnesses (as they say, “helping SuperKids thrive against the odds”). We can all agree that childhood cancer really sucks. (Sorry, we don’t usually say words like that but again, we think we can all agree it really, really does). Somehow, MaxLove Project makes it less so. Not only have they developed an action plan that helps children and their families “thrive against the odds,” it’s super empowering and sometimes super fun. Essentially, it’s helping kids find their inner superhero, so they can crush cancer. And while it’s a wonderful tool for those kids, we think it’s an action plan EVERY child could benefit from – it makes healthy living super fun! Here’s what it is:
What’s it all mean? Here’s a little more detail:
Boost Yourself With Super Thoughts
This is what’s called a “positive growth mindset.” In research studies, children are given a brief lesson about “neuroplasticity,” which is the science around how the brain is always changing and growing. The big takeaway is that by working at a task on a regular basis, you can actually change the way your brain works. Researchers found that children who got this lesson do much better in school than kids who didn’t. Learn more.
Eat Super Fierce Foods
This one is a no-brainer and it can be a real challenge with little ones. Beyond the standard “eat your veggies, so you can grow up big and strong,” or talking about the vague concept of health, the concept is to take it to the cellular level and teach kids how healthy foods create SuperCells that beat up the bad guys (cancer cells) in their bodies. For kids free of disease, you could introduce the concept when they have a cold or fever. Once they’re healthy again, you continue to encourage the concept because SuperCells will keep the “bad guys” from coming back. MaxLove has a Fierce Foods Academy to get kids involved in the cooking, which is key to getting them to eat healthier. While there’s no prescribed diet because everyone has different needs, what ALL healthy eating patterns have in common, is a focus on WHOLE FOODS and an avoidance of processed foods, especially sugar and refined carbohydrates like potato chips, crackers, and candy. Sleep Super Peacefully
Researchers are finding that healthy sleep is connected to nearly every function in our body, from our metabolic system and immune system to our cognition and mood. When we get full, restful, healthy sleep, we not only feel better, but our risks for all kinds of diseases goes down. This piece of the action plan is where Cloud b comes in and how we originally connected with MaxLove. Max was battling brain cancer and was terrified of the dark – no matter how many nightlights his mom put in his room, he couldn’t get over his anxiety. Needless to say, he wasn’t getting the sleep his body desperately needed. His mom bought him a Twilight Turtle and, bam!, it worked like magic. Better yet, he felt the green light was restorative and actually put the turtle to his head and said, “Look, mommy, I’m healing!” Audra approached us asking if she could get more turtles at wholesale for other children and we were so touched, we donated them. And we’ve donated over $100,000 in product since then to help thousands of children sleep better. Sleep is SO important! Learn more.
Unleash Your Super Strength
Physical activity has been linked to nearly every healthy outcome you can imagine: lower rates of cancer, heart disease, and stroke; increased energy; decreased stress; higher levels of life satisfaction; and a longer life. In fact, there isn’t much that increased physical activity won’t help. The even better news is that even a little bit of physical activity goes along way. Researchers have found that activities such as walking or standing, if done on a regular basis, can lead to improved health. Learn more.
Practice Super Mindfulness
Stress is linked to nearly every major disease. No matter how healthy we are in other parts of our lives, uncontrolled stress can undo everything. Research shows that stress control techniques such as guided meditation, intentional breathing, acupuncture, and yoga help us to manage stress and be more effective in the midst of stressful situations. Learn more.
Enlist Your Super Community
Health science research shows that we are healthier, happier, less stressed, and can more easily make healthy changes in our lives if we are connected with friends. That’s cool, right? Maybe you can even encourage your child’s friends to start the BE SUPER challenge! Learn more.
Refresh Your Super Surroundings
Healthy homes = healthier people. People who have taken steps to create healthier homes report sleeping better, feeling happier, getting sick less, and healing faster (among other things). And little changes can go a long way. For example, increased exposure to natural lighting improves people’s moods and their quality of sleep. Learn more.
