Every New Year’s a vast amount of people make resolutions to change certain aspects of their lives. Number one on that list is usually losing weight. After that people say, they want to be more focused, more organized, and save more money. These are all great goals, and we wholeheartedly support people making positive changes in their lives, but there’s a very important resolution that they’re missing that makes all the other ones easier to accomplish – Get More Sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that insufficient sleep is a public health problem, so this isn’t a superficial life-changing decision, it’s a vital part of leading a happy, healthy life. Here are some reasons why your number one New Year’s resolution should be to get more zzzzzz’s.
Sleep and Metabolism
In our Science of Sleep Series, we looked at the correlation between lack of sleep and obesity. A 2008 Harvard study revealed that the link between sleep and obesity goes back to infancy. Researchers found, in a study of 915 children who were followed from infancy to 2 years of age, that infants who got less than 12 hours of sleep a night were at a significantly increased risk for obesity as toddlers. In a 2011 study, researchers followed the sleep patterns and blood markers for metabolic disease for over 300 children. They found that children who slept less had significantly worse measures for fat storage, cholesterol, and inflammation. Although these findings have been confirmed for adults, this study was the first to discover that children faced the same risks.
Sleep and Keeping Focused
The Chernobyl nuclear plant explosion and the Exxon Valdez oil spill were two disasters that were linked to sleep deprivation. These are extreme examples of losing focus, but they demonstrate how getting more sleep can also keep you safer in everyday life. Driving a car and doing everyday household tasks both have the potential for random accidents that are more easily avoided if you are thinking clearly and are focused. This also has a big effect on your kids. Children of all ages are at a significantly increased risk of getting hurt in an accident if they don’t get enough sleep. Several large studies have shown that the less sleep a child gets, the more likely they are to accidentally hurt themselves. And while many accidents don’t require medical care, accidental injuries are the leading cause of death in children over one-year-old.
Sleep and Your Moods
Many people make a resolution to be more positive or to look on the bright side of things more often. Once again, it’s going to be harder to do if they don’t get enough sleep. This is true for an adult and a child. As parents know, a missed nap can often result in emotional outbursts, but poor nighttime sleep can cause broader emotional and behavioral trouble as well. Researchers now know that inadequate sleep causes different parts of a child’s brain to communicate less well leading to an inability to control emotions and behaviors. This means that both you and your kids need an adequate amount of sleep to be as happy as you really know you can be!
Sleep and Stress
We all went less stress in our lives. It makes us lose our temper easier, feel rushed, and generally makes the day less fun. But in this busy on-the-go day and age, how do we reduce stress? One way is to (you guessed it) get more sleep. Being well rested means that you can manage stressful situations better. It also helps you to calm down sooner after an anxious moment. According to the American Psychological Association, “ When we do not sleep long or well enough, our bodies do not get the full benefits of sleep, such as muscle repair and memory consolidation. Sleep is so crucial that even slight sleep deprivation or poor sleep can affect memory, judgment, and mood.”
