If you’re like most women, the excitement of being pregnant is dampened a bit by the thought of maternity clothes. You’ve got your own style, you love your clothes, and you don’t want to wear the same pair of sweats for six months. You probably also don’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe that’ll never get worn again after the baby arrives. Don’t worry! We know some clever maternity clothes hacks, tips and tricks – so you don’t have to compromise your style or spend a ton of money on all new clothes just because your belly’s getting bigger.
Hit the Thrift Stores – If you’re not already a regular thrifter, now’s the time to start. Maternity clothes typically don’t get worn for very long, so you can find them in great shape for super cheap. Also, with second-hand sites like eBay, BumptoBumpMaternity.com, NineLittleMonths.com, MotherhoodCloset.com and ResaleMaternity.com, it’s easier than ever to find great clothes on a dime.
Ask Friends – For some people, the idea of asking friends for clothes may be a little awkward. But, most friends are more than happy to share something that they aren’t going to wear again soon, or quite possibly never (if they know they are done having children). Or, they might know someone else you don’t that is looking to clean out their closets, too, so ask a good friend or relative and you may get a lot more than you expected for free!
Buy Some New Clothes a Little Too Big – Before you get a lot of new, specialty maternity wear, go to one of your favorite stores and buy some key (non-maternity) transitional pieces a couple sizes too big. Anything with a nice drape in a stretchy fabric will adapt very nicely to your growing middle. Maternity clothes are often more expensive than regular clothing, so anything that can do double duty will help you save a little money. Plus, these pieces are nice to wear after baby comes – before you’re back to your pre-pregnancy size.
Get Creative – There are some really awesome tutorials online that show how to turn regular clothes into maternity ones – even if you don’t have a lot of experience sewing. DIY is especially perfect for second hand clothes because it’s a lot less scary cutting into a pair of five dollar jeans, than a pair you bought for eighty dollars. We found easy tutorials on DIYMaternity.com for pants, a jersey maxi skirt, and even making your own belly band! There are tons of great ideas to explore, so have fun with it. And, who knows, maybe you’ll love sewing and start in on some baby clothes, too!
Be Practical (Some Things You Have to Buy) – No matter how frugal you want to be, there are some things that you don’t want second hand and can’t DIY. Bras and even undies aren’t going to fit after a while. Obviously, you’ll want to be comfortable, so make sure you invest in ones that you feel good in. Also, your feet might shift and grow a bit, so you might have to take a break from your shoe collection. This is a good time in your life to go to an actual shoe store that specializes in finding the right fit, so that you have the support you need.
Invest in Some Things You Love – You might be pregnant, but your life isn’t on hold, so you’ll still want something to wear when you want to go out and look great! This could be a maternity LBD or a pair of designer maternity jeans that you’ll wear over and over. Just get something that makes you feel awesome and ignore the price of it (you deserve it!).
