It’s quite the dilemma. Do you risk waking baby to change their diaper or risk not changing and it risk a dreaded diaper rash? Google this topic and you’ll discover some very passionate parents with opinions on how to deal with night time diaper changes. We personally think it’s a toss up, and it depends on the situation (is this the first sleep you’ve gotten in DAYS?!). So here are all the pros, cons, and tips for how to deal with night time diaper changes.
Not Change Diaper at Night:
-
Pros: More sleep for baby, and perhaps more importantly, you. This is not to say your baby might not wake up on their own from discomfort, but at least you’ve removed some risk of them waking. (Note: While you can consider skipping changing wet diapers, if your baby has a soiled diaper, you should definitely change it.)
-
Cons: Diaper rash.
Tips:
-
Try a diaper one size up for night time.
-
Change immediately upon waking and apply diaper rash cream.
-
If you know you’re baby is prone to diaper rash, opt to change the diaper even if baby is sleeping.
Change Diaper at Night:
-
Pros: Risk of diaper rash significantly decreases.
-
Cons: Your baby might wake up and not easily go back to sleep.
Tips:
-
Have baby sleep in open-bottom pajamas for easier access (Cloud b Lullabags are a great option!).
-
Have all your tools ready and a place nearby.
-
Try changing the diaper without moving your baby from the crib to prevent more disruption.
-
Use a nightlight instead of turning on a light and consider a sound machine (we think the Twilight Turtle Tunes is perfect for these situations).

I have been really struggling with sleep with the nighttime diaper changes.
I hope these tips would help me. I was also wondering if there are some special diapers made for this purpose.
